Big Skies, Meet Big Fright Night Thrills
Candles flicker outside. The moon beams down from the dark night sky. There’s a stillness in the air. When suddenly, you hear screams—of joy from trick-or-treaters. As they make their way down the streets of downtown Redmond, they’re not just filling their bags; they’re collecting memories along the way.
As the days get shorter and the temperatures get colder, there’s still a distinct warmth to this place heading into the Halloween season. This is a small town where kids can get big candy hauls and you can find pumpkins that are practically the size of small islands. After all, we like our holidays like we like our views: big.
Trick or Treat on 6th Street
Some go door-to-door at neighbors’ houses dressed up in costumes. In Redmond, we’re a tight-knit community so our local businesses open their doors to all. During Trick or Treat on 6th Street, we provide a place for families to stroll through downtown and enjoy the spirit of the scary season in a safe and welcoming environment. Take in the live music and play some family-friendly games. The celebration happens on October 31st from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM, but the experience—and great finds at local stores—lasts well beyond that.
Where Pirates Share Their Booty
For kids who are looking for candy, Trend Kill is the promised land. Here the shop employees dress up like pirates, perch themselves in a real Crow’s Nest at the top of the building, and throw countless sweet treats down to the excited kids below. Last year’s count was over 1,000 lbs worth and it’s expected to be even larger this year. Redmond holds a special place for the body piercing shop’s owner as he grew up here and this is his way of giving back to the community. Something tells us he has plenty of participants who are willing to take him up on his offer.
Go Big on Pumpkins
During the summer, climbers are focusing on hand holds out at Smith Rock State Park. But come fall, families are holding on to something else nearby: large pumpkins. At Smith Rock Ranch, you’ll find a seasonal pumpkin patch that comes complete with a side order of scenic mountain views. Come navigate your way through the corn maze and get lost in the moment. Sip some warm cider or enjoy a delicious homemade caramel apple. This is the way to do October right.
Settle in for a Thrilling Movie
There are forests and then there are Ghost Tree Forests. The Juniper Preserve Golf course becomes the latter during this special time of year. People bring their warm jackets and blankets, grab a complimentary chair, top it off with some beverages and snacks and then head out to a movie viewing area like no other. This year the wind will rustle through the juniper trees as Hocus Pocus plays on the screen Friday, October 30th from 7 PM – 9 PM. If it gets too scary, you can always look up and enjoy the calm of the stars overhead.
Big Scares for the Bigger Kids
You enter The Asylum and Juniper Hollow. You’ll come out proving just how brave you really are. These two haunted attractions have been thrilling visitors for years. One puts you in the center of an institution with patients beyond all hope of recovery as circus music permeates the air. The other transports you back to the early 1900s and into a community filled with acrobats, clowns, fortune tellers, and a collection of bizarre human oddities. In the middle of it all, you are searching for the exit door. We dare you to step inside.
Before You Go:
- Dress Warmly: The evenings can get brisk this time of year so always layer up and bring a rain jacket just in case.
- Wear Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be doing a bit of walking while trick-or-treating and finding the perfect pumpkin.
- Bring Extra Treat Bags: The stores get generous with candy but Mom and Dad can also use them to carry their own treats.
Spending Halloween in Redmond is an easy-going affair. The scarier part would be staying at home on the couch and not doing a little exploring in our thrilling basecamp.
